Hairstyling

This is a state licensed course designed to provide the student with the fundamentals needed to prepare for the Pennsylvania State Board Examination.  Instruction is provided in haircutting, conditioning, hair color and lightening, foil applications, and wet and thermal styling of the hair.  Skin care and make-up analysis, superfluous hair removal, eyebrow styling, massage manipulations, manicures, artificial nail applications, and pedicures are also part of this course.  Practical experience is gained by providing services through the operation of a clinic, whereby students work on volunteer clients from the community or other students.

Cosmetologist, hair stylist, receptionist, salon owner, nail technician, esthetician, beauty product demonstrator, make-up specialist, and platform artist.

Students will be required to purchase a student cosmetology kit ($90) and smock ($20) ordered through the Northern Tier Career Center.  Kits and smocks are required to receive PA State Board credit hours.  This kit includes:  Haircutting shears, razor kit, manicure set, brushes, combs, roller set, hair clips, and styling capes.

Nature of Work

A pleasant personality is important with good soft skills.  Must be able to stand for long periods of time and have good manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

Grade 11:  Theory/Sanitation & Disinfection (240 hr.); Haircutting (150); Facials (50);  Manicuring (200); College Prep English III; Algebra II; Chemistry w/ lab; Principles of Technology; and American History.  Grade 12:  Wet & Thermal Hair Styling (170); Hair Coloring (150); Permanent Waving and Chemical Straightening (200); Scalp Treatments/ Shampooing and Conditioning (90); College Pre English IV; Trigonometry or other advanced math; Physical Science II; and Problems of Democracy/ Economics.

Articulation Agreements

All students’ hours can be transferred to other post-secondary schools upon request.
